Automotive advertising agencies don’t know what they don’t know and they are turning to social networking communities like http://AdAgencyOnline.Net to listen and learn about the increasing role of social media in automotive advertising.  Philip Zelinger, the President of Ad Agency Online, L.L.C. — a national network of independent automotive advertising agencies — hosts a blog talk radio station — WAAOL, All Automotive Advertising News All The Time — where he shares best practices with his affiliated automotive advertising agencies and automotive advertising decision makers that regularly follow his shows and contribute to their shared portal.

Social media is a new phenomenon that allows auto dealers to broadcast their own marketing messages to a targeted audience using established automotive advertising wisdoms, but in a more consumer centric manner and for a fraction of the cost of conventional media.  Technology has always dictated the most efficient means to advertise a product or service and the Internet has opened a new channel with unlimited potential for reach and frequency of message.  Previously, conventional media — such as newspaper, radio and T.V. — was controlled by big business primarily because of the amount of capital that was required to distribute their content.  Philip Zelinger explained his support of social media in a comment on his recent blog talk radio show; “The Internet Super Highway has been built with no tolls — for now at least — and automotive advertising agencies only need to learn the rules of the road in order to travel on it.”

Some of the blog talk radio shows hosted by Philip on WAAOL include Lunch With Phil Discussing Automotive Advertising - an open business forum with live call in questions from listeners, Lunch With Ralph Paglia Discussing Automotive Advertising - a special platform for Ralph Paglia, the National Director Of Digital marketing for ADP and the host of his own auto industry social networking community http://AutomotiveDigitalMarketing.Com (ADM), and Automotive Advertising Experts where Philip invites automotive advertising insiders to discuss their products, services or unique insights into the future of the automotive advertising industry.  Most recently, the guest on the Automotive Advertising Experts show was L.J. Marhefka, the Program Coordinator for the TARP Lending Program, (Together Automotive Retailing Prospers).  Philip and L.J discussed TARP and their participation in the 2010 NIADA Convention scheduled at Caesar’s Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas June 14th., 2010 through June 17th., 2010. Philip will join the originator of the TARP program, Keith Whann, in a panel on social media to be held on Wednesday morning for the general session at the convention.

In the week prior to his interview with L.J., Philip interviewed Brian Pasch, the President of PCG Digital Marketing and the host of http://InternetSalesManager.Org.  The pair of automotive advertising experts discussed a new automotive advertising platform introduced by Brian and Sean Wolfington — http://AutomotiveAdvertisingNetwork.Com ,(AAN), that provides leveraged online exposure and resources to develop leads for auto dealers that pay a flat monthly fee to list their inventory. The subjects discussed and the guests that appear on WAAOL are chosen from a diverse group of friends and professional associates of Philip Zelinger who share his philosophy that a rising tide floats all boats. Philip Zelinger, the President of Ad Agency Online, L.L.C. and host of the automotive advertising resource/networking portal — http://AdAgencyOnline.Net — promoted the 2010 NIADA Convention and the TARP Lending Program on his blog talk radio station featured on AdAgencyOnline.Net — WAAOL, All Automotive Advertising News All The Time.  The National Independent Automobile Dealers Association, (NIADA), is hosting their annual convention at Caesar’s Palace Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from June 14th, 2010 through June 17th, 2010.  Philip Zelinger will be attending the convention and sitting on a panel discussing social media that is being hosted by Keith Whann, the General Counsel for the NIADA,  host of a new auto industry social networking portal — http://Auttr.Com — and the originator of the TARP Lending Program — Together Automotive Retailers Prosper.

Lenders have been invited to present their financial products and services to the auto dealers and automotive advertising agencies that will be in attendance at the NIADA Convention in a special section set aside by Keith Whann to promote his unique version of the TARP program.  The TARP lending Program is the brainchild of Auto Industry Expert, Keith Whann.  When credit markets were all too tough about a year and one-half ago, Keith, seeing that both dealers and consumers needed capital sources to continue to achieve their goals, sought out lenders that had available capital to service both dealers and consumers.  Keith also realized that there were many other potential lenders with available capital that were doing business with franchised dealers only, but could (and should) be doing business with independents.  He realized through education, we could help lenders mitigate (or in some cases eliminate) risk.  The TARP Lending Program does exactly this; The program brings lenders and dealers together and provides education which helps in the development of strong, long-term lender/dealer relationships.

About The Tarp Lending Program

The first TARP Program was help in Columbus, Ohio in March of 2009.  There were about 30 lenders and 250 dealers gathered at the event.  Next, the TARP Program went to Orlando, Florida and was held with the NIADA Convention.  Other TARP venues include;  Columbus, Ohio (October 2009), Philadelphia, PA (November 2009), Orlando, FL (January, 2010), Dallas, TX (March, 2010), Fredericksburg, VA (May, 2010).  Over 100 lenders have participated at these events and (by the end of the TARP Program in Las Vegas in June) over 3000 dealers will have found success with the program.

About Keith Whann

Keith Whann, is the founder of the law firm Whann & Associates LLC, located in Dublin, Ohio. Over a career that has spanned 25 years from a beginning as an Assistant Ohio Attorney General in the Consumer Protection Division thru today, as General Counsel of the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association, a co-owner, CEO and General Counsel of the Columbus Fair Auto Auction and The Car Counselor to the motor vehicle industry, Keith has become a leading national authority on motor vehicle and consumer protection issues.

Through the years Keith has had over 1,000 articles published in trade journals across the country and his monthly columns discussing compliance and consumer protection issues and providing legal updates to the industry continue to be favorites of dealers and consumers alike.

Keith has conducted hundreds of seminars across the country and appeared as a featured speaker on a wide variety of topics affecting the industry. He has spoken at conventions and meetings for over 50 national and state motor vehicle industry related trade associations and regulatory agencies dealing with complex automobile industry issues.

At the conclusion of these seminars Keith would end with an open Q&A session.  These sessions became so popular (ruining numerous meeting schedules along the way) that he developed “Ask the Car Counselor” to make the Q&A session an event in itself. In 2004, at the suggestion of friends, Keith took the show on the road to 97.1 FM in Amarillo, Texas and The Car Counselor program was born.  Unbeknownst at the time, Keith’s two-hour program was one of the first live broadcasts over the Internet.

Since that time, many of Keith’s presentations have been filmed and broadcast on the NIADA.TV and Automotive Consumer Television networks, including the seven hour 2005 and 2006 National Dealer Compliance and Profitability Expos (which Keith both developed and moderated) and various presentations at NIADA National Conventions and Regional Education Conferences from 2005 to 2009.

Keith has also developed numerous training and compliance programs for the motor vehicle industry.  In 2005, he launched the KeithWhann.com website containing information, a series of tools and various resource materials to assist motor vehicle dealers with business, legal and compliance matters.  In 2006, Keith added sections to the site for consumers to answer their questions and provide them with information to assist them in the car buying and ownership processes.  Today, audio and video answers to hundreds of dealer and consumer questions appear in the Car Counselor section of the site.

Keith’s latest project finds him as one of the developers of the recently launched www.Auttr.com social media website dedicated to the automotive industry. The site not only allows dealers, consumers and the automotive industry as a whole to network, communicate and share information individually and in groups, but also allows you to search for a vehicle and provides instant access to up to the minute industry news, information and answers to questions in written, audio and video formats, with a few live broadcasts for good measure.  Think Facebook, with Twitter capability, the functionality of a MySpace or Linked-in, combined with industry news and information feeds, along with the ability to have a question answered, search for a car or watch and participate in one of Keith’s live broadcasts and – you’ve got Auttr!

In March of 2009 Keith was asked to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection at a hearing titled, “Consumer Protection in the Used and Subprime Car Market.”  Leading up to his testimony, the automobile industry was facing its toughest times in over two decades.

A sluggish economy with sagging auto sales, auto Manufacturers filing for bankruptcy, lenders leaving the automotive sector and consumer bankruptcy rates rising to all time highs were producing a very negative environment in the industry.

As opposed to waiting for something to happen, Keith decided to try and do something to improve what he saw around him.  Using the Troubled Asset Relief Program’s “TARP” acronym he created his own TARP: “Together Automotive Retailing Prospers” with a goal of bringing positive, lasting change to the automotive industry one car deal at a time.  Over 30 lenders and 300 plus attendees participated in the first TARP Event in March.  Over 50 lenders and 900 plus attendees participated at TARP Event at the NIADA Convention in June.

Keith is introducing a new expanded TARP Program.  Its mission is to enable capital to flow to car dealers for floor planning of inventory, develop additional finance sources for retail customers, introduce the new NIADA certified vehicle program, enhance and improve dealership F&I processes and teach the keys to a dealer’s online success.  And now, Keith will also be unveiling his new “Car Buying IS FUN” Program for consumers teaching them the right way to buy a car.  Add it all together, and that’s what the Car Counselor’s TARP is all about!

L.J. Marhefka, the TARP Program Coordinator, suggested that Lenders who want to participate in the Tarp Lending Program and who wish to exhibit at the 2010 NIADA Convention need to get hotel reservations for Caesar’s Palace Hotel and Casino. The hotel information can be found at: https://www.harrahs.com/CheckGroupAvailability.do?propCode=CLV&groupCode=SCNAD0E.

The total cost for a lender to exhibit can be under $1999 — including air fare from most areas with specially negotiated discounts on American Airlines posted on the NIADA website — for one attendee to fully participate in the TARP Lending Program and the NIADA Annual Convention and Expo.  The TARP Lender Table Expo charge is $895.  This includes three days of exhibiting in the TARP Area of the NIADA Expo Hall (for layout details, go to:  http://sites.google.com/site/tarplasvegas/home), and full registration for one attendee.

One of the greatest benefits of being at the NIADA Convention as a TARP  Lender are the Lender Tables.  TARP exhibitors have a great position within the Expo Hall and there is very little setup.  Registration as an exhibitor includes the draped table, the chairs, and the sign.  Lenders simply need to bring something informative that describes your niche to hand out to dealers, and a lead-recording tool.

L.J. suggests that TARP Lender exhibitors should plan on arriving to Vegas on June 15th and show up at the Lender TARP area by 4:30 and be ready for the kickoff at 5:00 pm.  Stay until 9 pm when the Expo closes.  Be at the your TARP Table on June 16th from 11-3 and on June 17th from 11-2.  Head for home on Thursday afternoon, and be back in the office by Friday.

Registration forms are available at – http://sites.google.com/site/tarplasvegas/lender-forms.  Completed  forms should be forwarded via fax to Kimberly Cook at NIADA (817-649-5866 or 817-649-5618).

Philip Zelinger, the President of Ad Agency Online, L.L.C.,(AAOL), and host of the blog talk radio station WAAOL, All Automotive Advertising News All The Time featured on the automotive advertising resource / networking portal http://AdAgencyOnline.Net , announced on his Lunch With Phil Discussing Automotive Advertising show that he will be integrating a special section on AdAgencyOnline.Net called “Auto Industry Insiders.”  Automotive advertising agencies are following their auto dealer clients onto the Internet Super Highway for the same reasons that auto dealers are following their customers there — to sell more vehicles and service.  The Internet is the media of choice to find information on anything automotive related.  Automotive advertising agencies need to keep up with new technologies to help them sell more vehicles and service with reduced staff and budgets so they are turning to social networking communities to find and share best practices to solve common problems.

Philip explained why he is adding the Auto Industry Insiders section to AdAgencyOnline.Net with direct links to what some might consider competing automotive advertising resource / networking sites. “Sharing best practices with the affiliated automotive advertising agencies supported by Ad Agency Online allows us all to leverage our individual resources and relationships.  I formed AdAgencyOnline.Net to enhance our online communication platform with the blog talk radio shows functioning as open business meetings where we could review present and pending automotive advertising vendor solutions.  Our success in discovering bleeding edge automotive advertising applications on WAAOL proved out our shared philosophy that a rising tide floats all boats and by opening our platform to the World Wide Web we expanded our network of friends exponentially.  I consider the growing number of auto industry and automotive advertising social networking websites as an extension of our own online community and resources.  Our Auto Industry Insiders section is my way of recognizing their contributions by hosting it as a Network Of Networkers made up of recognized auto industry insiders who have resources and best practices to share.  After all, what are friends for!”

The new Auto Industry Insiders section is expected to be live on AdAgencyOnline.Net on or before May 31st, 2010.  Presently, the following auto industry insiders and their associated networking sites have been invited to be featured in this communal information resource section:

Ralph Paglia, National Director of Digital marketing for ADP and host of ADM — http://AutomotiveDigitalMarketing.Com

Brian Pasch, CEO of PCG Digital marketing and host of http://www.InternetSalesmanager.Org

Jared Hamilton, a third generation Ford Dealer and host of http://DrivingSales.Com

Keith Whann, Attorney At Law – Founder of the law firm Whann & Associates LLC, located in Dublin, Ohio – and host of http://Auttr.Com

Jody Devere, President of Ask Patty and host of http://AskPatty.Com

Scott Monty, Head Of Social Media for Ford Motors and host of The Social Media marketing Blog — http://ScottMonty.Com

Chris Saraceno, Vice President/Partner Kelly Automotive Group and host of http://DealerElite.Net

All of the selected contributors to Auto Industry Insiders have established reputations in the auto and automotive advertising industry.  Their respective online networking communities have differing personalities and rules that govern their content and memberships, however they share their common goal to improve the auto industry that defines them as much as they define it.

Philip anticipates that there will be many more Auto Industry Insiders added to the site and he has designed the section to be easily expandable as these valued contributors surface.  “Frankly, I have a list of friends and other sites that I personally support and contribute to, however, these first honored participants represent a diversity of experience, resources and site regulations that govern their content which is complimentary and representative of a variety of specialized verticals within the auto industry and the automotive advertising industry that supports it.  My personal branding line of — What are friends for — reflects the opportunity that Auto Industry Insiders should bring to us all since the reciprocal links to our respective sites should enhance our individual S.E.O. as well as providing added value content for our communities.  Besides, combining business with pleasure is always a good thing; this is going to be fun!”

Best Practices for Automotive Retailers on Hiring and Retaining Women

The statistics about the importance of women as a consumer are very familiar to all of us. Women account for 85% of all purchases which includes everything from homes to groceries and control TRILLIONS of dollars of wealth in this country. For those of us in the Automotive Industry, we know how vital the women consumers are to all of us; after all, they represent over 65% of our business. The challenge for all of us is how to make our place of business a comfortable place for women to patronize and purchase our products and services.

It goes without saying that the place where business is conducted must be inviting to both the women and men who come through our doors AND it must also reflect the marketplace in which we do business. Having said that, many of us do not know how or where to find the women we need to hire.

Based on my experience here are some suggestions:

  • Create awareness that your place of business is hiring women and what career opportunities it has to offer.
  • Visit schools and colleges and participate in career days
  • Offer intern programs which will help identify and attract talented people
  • Offer scholarships in the name of your business
  • Join local women’ organizations
  • Invite women’s organizations to hold their meetings in your place of business
  • Support women’s events in your local community
  • Advertise in women’s magazines or trade publications
  • Offer incentives to your own employee for referrals
  • Speak at the local Chamber of Commerce to get the word out that you are looking for female employees
  • Most real estate agents are women so connecting with the local Real Estate business is another resource for hiring women

The importance of word of mouth in addition to formalized advertising is very critical in attracting women employees so the more you can get out into the community, the better the success of finding and hiring talent.

Make certain that your work place policies are conducive to both men and women.

  • The workplace should be clean and neat and an inviting one that works for all employees
  • It should be inclusive environment where everyone is treated with respect and valued
  • Offer not only full time employment but flexible work place policies such as part time, work at home, team selling, job-sharing for everyone not just women. After all, work life balance is an issue for everyone.
  • Have a mentor or buddy system not just for women but for the all new hires
  • Post “work week” schedules in advance so that employees can plan their “life week”
  • Provide processes that will accommodate for input and feedback for workplace improvement
  • TRAIN-TRAIN-TRAIN all of your employees to understand how to treat each other in the work place and also how to treat the female customers when they come into your business establishment.

The important key here is to make sure that ALL employees are valued, are treated with respect, and have opportunities for growth.

Turnover in any is business unwanted and it seems that in the Auto Industry there is a higher percentage than other businesses.

By having policies in place to attract and retain talented employees: it will increase your customer base, reduce absenteeism, reduce costs, improve employee morale, and very importantly it will positively impact your bottom line.

CONCLUSION

This compilation of best practices is my insight into what needs to be in place to attract and engage women but it is also important to remember that companies pursue programs and practices that specifically fit your organization, your workers, and your managers. What is most vital is to harness the skills, talents and hard work of everyone on your team.

Customers want to feel comfortable, respected, and trusted and so do your female (and male) employees.
